Elon Musk Wants to Put AI Data Centres in Space

SpaceX has been developing plans for orbital AI data centres using technology from its Starlink satellite programme, with the first planned AI satellite expected to provide around 120 kilowatts of sustained computing power.

Traditional AI data centres require enormous electricity, land, cooling and networking infrastructure. Space offers an unusual alternative — continuous solar power and a natural environment for radiating heat — which is now being discussed as a real infrastructure strategy, not just science fiction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are these already operating?

No — the reported plans concern future orbital AI infrastructure, not a system already in use.

Is this the same as ordinary Starlink?

No — Starlink primarily provides satellite connectivity; the proposed AI satellites would focus on computing power.

Why space?

Continuous solar power and a natural environment for radiating heat away from the hardware are among the major attractions.
