South Africa's Small Claims Court Limit Increased to R30,000 in August 2026

From 1 August 2026, the monetary jurisdiction of South Africa's Small Claims Courts increased from R20,000 to R30,000, giving individuals a quicker, more cost-effective route for qualifying civil claims up to that amount without needing legal representation.

A relatively small dispute can be difficult to pursue through ordinary litigation because legal costs quickly become disproportionate to the amount claimed. The higher limit gives consumers and small business owners another practical avenue when a business or individual owes them money, in cases that might otherwise not be worth pursuing.
