A Salary Increase Doesn't Mean the Entire Increase Goes to Tax

South Africa uses a progressive income-tax system, meaning different portions of taxable income are taxed at different rates — moving into a higher tax bracket doesn't mean your entire income suddenly gets taxed at that higher rate.

This is one of the most common misunderstandings about tax brackets. Someone might reject a salary increase believing SARS will take more tax from everything they earn — that's not how a progressive system works, and take-home pay still rises with an increase.
