MXit Was a South African Mobile-Innovation Pioneer

MXit, founded by Herman Heunis and rooted in mobile-software experiments dating back to 2003, became one of South Africa's most famous technology success stories in the era of Java phones and SMS, well before WhatsApp existed — though it's more accurate to call it a pioneer than "the first South African app."

Many younger people know WhatsApp as if mobile messaging began with smartphones. It didn't — MXit operated in an era of Java phones, SMS, GPRS and much smaller screens, demonstrating that South African developers could build products specifically designed for mobile communication long before today's smartphone ecosystem. It was eventually shut down in 2016.
