South Africa's Minimum Wage Isn't the Same for Everyone

The national minimum wage rose to R30.23 per hour from March 2026, with farm and domestic workers now at full parity — while Expanded Public Works Programme workers fall under a separate, lower rate of R16.62 per hour.

For workers, knowing the current minimum, and that it can't legally be waived even by mutual agreement, is a basic protection. For employers, particularly small businesses and households employing domestic staff, underpaying below the minimum wage carries real legal and financial risk, including possible penalties and back-pay orders from the Department of Employment and Labour.
