South Africa hosted the first FIFA World Cup held on African soil

The 2010 FIFA World Cup, hosted by South Africa, was the first time football's biggest tournament had ever been held on the African continent.

The tournament required major national investment in stadiums, transport and infrastructure — including the Gautrain and upgrades to several international airports — much of which continues to serve the country well beyond the World Cup itself.
