When people hear about a project worth hundreds of billions of dollars, the natural question for Africa is:
Where is Africa in this race?
Project Stargate provides an uncomfortable answer.
The infrastructure currently being built under the Stargate name is overwhelmingly concentrated in the United States. Africa is not currently a hosting location for Stargate-scale AI infrastructure.
But that does not mean Africa is outside the AI revolution.
In fact, the more interesting opportunity may be somewhere completely different.
Africa's infrastructure challenge
Stargate depends on enormous amounts of electricity.
That is already a challenge in the United States, where data-centre developers are increasingly confronting grid constraints, permitting delays and community concerns over power and water use.
For many African countries, inadequate grid capacity is not a new problem.
The book points out that African countries already deal with power scarcity, load-shedding and distributed-generation challenges — problems that Stargate's developers are encountering at a completely different scale.

The opportunity may be on the other side of the data centre

A Nigerian logistics company does not need to own a supercomputer to optimise routes.
A Kenyan business does not need to build a hyperscale data centre to use AI for customer service.
The infrastructure can sit somewhere else.
The application can happen locally.
The book describes this as one of the more realistic opportunities for Africa: using increasingly capable and increasingly affordable AI tools to solve African problems.
From infrastructure to application
That distinction could become one of the most important economic questions of the next decade.
Should African countries try to compete directly with the United States in building enormous AI campuses?
Or should they focus on becoming exceptionally good at applying AI to problems where local knowledge provides an advantage?
The second route may be more immediately accessible.
Consider sectors such as:
Agriculture: AI can help analyse information, improve planning and support decision-making.
Logistics: Businesses can use increasingly capable AI systems to optimise operations and processes.
Education: AI tools can make information and learning support more accessible.
Healthcare: AI applications could assist with information processing and access to services.
Financial inclusion: AI-enabled tools may help businesses and consumers interact with financial systems more efficiently.
These examples are not dependent on Africa owning the underlying GPUs.
They depend on Africa having people and businesses capable of applying the tools intelligently.
Digital sovereignty still matters
There is, however, a serious question underneath this opportunity.
If Africa depends entirely on computing infrastructure owned elsewhere, what happens to digital sovereignty?
The book defines digital sovereignty as meaningful control over a country's or region's own data, computing infrastructure and digital services.
That question becomes increasingly important as AI becomes embedded in economies.
African governments may eventually need to consider regional data centres, partnerships, local compute capacity, data-localisation policies and energy strategies.
The answer does not necessarily have to be “build our own Stargate.”
It could be smaller, regional and designed around African infrastructure realities.
There is another opportunity: skills
The Stargate story is also a jobs story.
The American construction phase is expected to create more than 25,000 direct jobs, particularly in skilled trades such as electrical work, HVAC, fibre networking and construction.
Africa will not receive most of those direct construction jobs.
But the downstream AI economy is different.
The book argues that cheaper and more capable AI tools could reach African freelancers, entrepreneurs and businesses through nothing more than an internet connection.
That makes AI literacy increasingly important.
The competitive question for an African entrepreneur may not be:
“Can I build an AI data centre?”
It may be:
“Can I use AI better than the business competing with me?”
That is a much more accessible question.
Africa's Stargate moment may look different
The biggest mistake would be assuming that every country must participate in the AI revolution in exactly the same way.
The United States may build giant computing campuses.
Other countries may supply chips, capital, energy or cloud services.
Africa may have an opportunity to become extremely effective at using AI to solve local problems and deliver globally competitive services.
The book deliberately leaves the long-term infrastructure question open. Africa could eventually develop meaningful compute capacity of its own through partnerships, regional data centres or energy models suited to local conditions.
But the immediate opportunity is already here.
Africa does not have to wait for the next giant data centre.
It can start building businesses around the intelligence that those data centres produce.
